From GOT to GONE

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched, nor will the flame burn you.

Isaiah 43:2

Today is the anniversary of something major!! On December 12th, 2019, I received a phone call from my ex-brother-in-law telling me that my sister, Kimberly was experiencing some issues with bleeding and needed to go to an urgent care facility or emergency room to be checked out. On January 7th, 2020, my sister got the news that she had Stage 3 Rectal Cancer, a diagnosis that wasn’t unfamiliar to the family.  We made sure to remind her and ourselves, that yes – you have cancer, but cancer does not have you. The next 12 months would be tough but so easy because we were all trusting God to shield, protect and cover her and her daughter, Breanna. See we don’t know why God does what He does, until it’s done.

Just a few months prior to her diagnosis, my sister started a new job and moved into a new neighborhood.  For most people, this would not have been favorable but for Kimberly, it was the beginning of God’s greatest favor falling into her life. He moved her to a company that cared about people. He placed her under a Director who was very familiar with everything that she was about to go through. He surrounded her with coworkers and vendors who had only known her for a little while but were eager to donate weeks of PTO and sick time so that she had no worries about what her paycheck would look like if her time ran out. They happily offered to help with transportation for her treatments, picking up her daughter from school and after school activities and making sure that there were no meals missed in her home.

After finding the mass, her doctors suggested that an aggressive treatment plan was the way to go. This plan of treatment would help to shrink the mass making it easier to remove or reveal if she would have to undergo another surgery to have the area removed all together leaving her with an ostomy bag. March 3rd, 2020, Kimberly had her first of twenty-eight aggressive radiation treatments, that would be done consecutively. In the planning meeting they forewarned us of every possible side effect that awaited her with these treatments, not to mention that by this time Covid-19 had shown up outside. Ohhhhh but GOD!!! He released another stage of favor over her so strong that no side effects touched her until the very last day of treatment and though tough, they were minimal.

He divided the sea and caused them to pass through, And He made the waters stand up like a heap.

Psalm 78:13

A few weeks later, it was discovered that even though the mass had become smaller, it was too deep to rule out the presence of any cancerous cells. To make sure the cancer was gone, she would have to have a surgery that removed her sphincter muscle making her completely dependent on an ostomy bag for all bowel movements. This discovery could have been the takeout moment for my sister but when God has makes sure that you have His people in your corner every step of the journey, your perspective is shifted. Just months earlier her physician presented us with her reason for being a colon and rectal physician when she saw the look on our face whenever an ostomy bag was mentioned. She firmly said “This disease, in this area is treatable and one you can survive when caught in time. We’ve caught this in time, so, our goals are LIFE, CANCER FREE and then all that other stuff”. We were left speechless, but our minds were so opened to the small bumps that were to come because we were after LIVING.

And living is what Kimberly has done!!! On June 19th, 2020, she underwent surgery for her ostomy bag placement and has embraced the challenge. With help from friends in the medical field and trial and error she has found the products that work for her and is so eager to see how she can help guide others through. Kimberly completed her second round of radiation and chemotherapy on December 28th and we know that was ALL GOD letting us know that no residue of this disease will follow her into her NEXT!! On today, January 7th, 2020 we are just grateful that God has allowed us to say – “He took her from GOT to GONE” as she enters 2021 cancer FREE!!

So today, I just want to remind someone that no matter what obstacles you face today, whether they be physical, mental, spiritual, or financial – you can defeat it!! But you gotta know that you carry the power and the authority to speak to every mountain and command it to MOVE!! Pray for God to send the right people to your circles so that when you face challenges, they are ready to speak God’s word over you so the atmosphere can be SHIFTED!!

But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
